Call for Applications: 2026–27 and 2027–28 Freund Teaching Fellowships 

Emerging and mid-career visual artists working in any art medium are encouraged to apply for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellowships. 

Established in 1986, the fellowship is jointly sponsored by the Saint Louis Art Museum and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, with support from the Freund Endowment Fund. 

Fellows are on campus for one semester. During this time, they teach one class of their own design in the school’s College of Art and occupy an on-campus studio — with access to WashU’s state-of-the-art facilities — to begin production of a solo exhibition. The exhibition is mounted the following year as part of the Saint Louis Art Museum’s Currents exhibition series. The teaching award is $45,000 in combination with an additional production grant from the museum.  

Applicants must have earned an MFA at least five years ago and have professional exhibition experience. The committee seeks artists to join WashU’s vibrant and creative community who are making compelling work and have an interest in teaching. Prior teaching experience is not required. Applicants submit a portfolio of work in addition to making a general proposal for a course they would like to teach, related to their practice and interest areas.  

Past fellows include: Catherine Opie (2000), Ellen Gallagher (2002-03), Sarah Oppenheimer (2007-08), Andréa Stanislav (2015-16), Jess T. Dugan (2020-21), Blas Isasi Gutiérrez (2024-25), Meleko Mokgosi (2021-22), and Tamara Johnson (2022-23), among many others.
