Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts and her wife, Amber Laign, are sharing their secret to a long-lasting romantic relationship.

“The true secret: separate apartments,” Laign told E! News on Thursday, June 12, while attending the opening night of Jean Smart’s one-woman Broady show titled Call Me Izzy.

“Communication, keeping it fresh, trust — all the good pillars,” she added.

Roberts, 64, who married Laign in 2023 after the pair first met in 2005 on a blind date, agreed with her spouse, telling the outlet that “trust” is a big part of a healthy relationship.

“Trust is very, very big,” she explained. “We’ve had peaks and valleys — mainly majority peaks, but there have been some valleys.

She continued, “Once we learned to not look at each other through the lens of our childhood, that was a real breakthrough for us. It was a real understanding [of] having different paths to get here.”

Roberts and Laign privately dated for years before the Good Morning America anchor publicly acknowledged their relationship via a Facebook post in 2013, in which she also came out as a gay woman. Since then, the pair have been more open about their romance.

“15 years ago I met you for drinks on a blind date that both you and I tried to cancel…twice,” Laign wrote in a 2020 Instagram post in honor of the pair’s anniversary. “Your grace caught my eye right away and the ease of the evening continued to flow through dinner.”

She continued at the time,” We had a second date soon after and I couldn’t believe how at ease I was with you as we shared each other’s lives sipping lychee and apple martinis. You left for Tahiti the following day and during that time apart I grew this feeling inside of me that still is very present today…butterflies.”

The couple are far from the first to find relationship success courtesy of a little (or a lot of) space. In 2022, Kourtney Kardashian revealed that she and husband Travis Barker lived in separate homes months after their tying the knot.

“We want our kids to also feel really comfortable and they have both lived in their homes their whole lives for the most part, and they each have their rooms and we are a block away,” Kardashian explained on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast at the time. “When the kids are at their dad’s house, I stay at [Travis’] house, and there’s still nights when we’ll stay at each other’s houses in between.”
