In heartbreaking news for the television community, Demond Wilson, revered for his portrayal of Lamont in the iconic sitcom Sanford and Son, has sadly passed away. He was 79 years old.
The news was reported by TMZ, following a conversation with his son, Demond Wilson Jr. According to Wilson Jr., his father died peacefully at home in Palm Springs after a courageous battle with cancer. “I loved him. He was a great man,” the younger Wilson expressed in his heartfelt tribute.

Demond Wilson’s rise to fame began with his unforgettable role on Sanford and Son, which he secured after impressing producers with a guest appearance on All in the Family. Initially, Wilson was skeptical about the success of the show; in the 2011 book Black and Blue: The Redd Foxx Story, he revealed his doubts about the series format. “I thought about it long and hard and decided to take a chance,” he recalled. He, along with comedy legend Redd Foxx, hoped that the show might provide them with quick financial gain and some notoriety, paving the way for future opportunities.
To their surprise, Sanford and Son became one of the highest-rated shows on television. Premiering on Friday nights at 8 PM, it quickly outperformed popular shows like The Brady Bunch and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. During the 1972-73 ratings season, Sanford and Son reached the impressive number two overall spot and maintained a top ten ranking for all of its last five seasons.

After Redd Foxx left the show due to a salary dispute in the 1974 season, Wilson took the reins, ensuring the show’s continued success. However, Foxx departed for good soon after to host his own variety program. Faced with the opportunity to continue on without his co-star, Wilson ultimately chose to pursue other ventures. He accepted a lucrative role in the CBS sitcom Baby … I’m Back, where he played a man returning to the family he had abandoned. Unfortunately, the show only lasted 13 episodes.
In the years following Sanford and Son, Wilson remained a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. He was the last surviving main cast member from the show, marking the end of an era with his passing.
As we reflect on Demond Wilson’s remarkable career and his contributions to television, our hearts go out to his family and friends during this profoundly difficult time. His legacy will undoubtedly live on through his unforgettable performances and the cherished memories he created for audiences worldwide.
