Grey’s Anatomy Cast Rallies Around Eric Dane Amid ALS Battle

The beloved cast of Grey’s Anatomy is standing firmly behind Eric Dane as he confronts his ongoing battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Known for his memorable portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan, also affectionately dubbed ‘McSteamy’, Dane bid farewell to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in 2012 after an impressive run of over 140 episodes.

Since revealing his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, Dane has received an outpouring of support from his former castmates. Patrick Dempsey, who played Derek Shepherd on the show, shared insights into their recent interactions in a January 2026 interview with Parade. “I spoke to him a few weeks ago. I’ve been texting with him,” Dempsey said. “We were trying to get him in [Memory of a Killer], but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible. However, I was happy to see that he was here in Toronto working on another medical drama, [Brilliant Minds].”

Dane has limited his public appearances due to his health, but he remains committed to raising awareness about ALS. In a heartfelt statement during a virtual event for I AM ALS in December 2025, he expressed the importance of educating others about the disease. “Obviously, I have a family at home and they’re the first priority,” he acknowledged. “But this is such a big deal to me to make sure that people are aware of what ALS is and what it’s about and, more importantly, what we can do to combat it and improve the landscape.”

• Kate Walsh: Although she hasn’t been in direct contact with Dane, Walsh conveyed her love and support. “It’s so heartbreaking.
