Johnny (Joseph Zada) has a secret and Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) is starting to get her memory back, which makes for a chaotic third installment of We Were Liars.

The episode, titled “The Ties Were Black, The Lies Were White,” opens with Cadence in Summer 17 exploring her grandfather’s new house and looking for answers. After a fight with Harris (David Morse), Cadence runs to Beechwood Island’s rose garden and starts to get flashes of memories about her grandmother Tipper’s (Wendy Crewson) funeral.

Cadence searches out the rest of The Liars — Johnny, Mirren (Esther McGregor) and Gat (Shubham Maheshwari) — and begs them for more details about that day. Tipper’s funeral is told through flashback scenes from Summer 16.

However, when it came time for Harris to eulogize his late wife, the show cuts to present day in Summer 17 with The Liars telling Cadence they can’t remember what he said. This seems to offer more questions than it does answers.

Episode 3 also introduced the moms — Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald), Bess (Candice King) and Carrie (Mamie Gummer) — and their obsession with their inheritance. The three women start fighting over who gets money and gifts now that Tipper is dead, which angers Harris.

Tipper’s funeral scenes from Summer 16 feature a new character, Blake Beaumont (Cale Ambrozic), who spooked Johnny with his presence. It’s later revealed that Blake is the boy that’s been “sexting” with Mirren. While she assumed he came to Tipper’s funeral to hook up, Johnny revealed that Blake came for him. A subsequent flashback scene revealed that Blake and Johnny hooked up at the funeral — and Cadence caught them making out.

However, Cadence tells Gat in Summer 17 that she knows Johnny is lying about what went down with Blake. As it turned out, Cadence was staying true to her name as a Liar and pretended she didn’t remember the day of the funeral to see who was hiding things from her. Johnny outright lied about Blake. They never hooked up at all — in fact, they fought.

How Does Prime Video’s ‘We Were Liars’ Series Compare to E. Lockhart’s Book?

“That’s bulls***, you’re using Mirren to get at me at my grandmother’s funeral,” Cadence overheard Johnny telling Blake in Summer 16. “Don’t f***ing touch me.”

Blake responded, “What are you gonna do, killer? What are you going to ruin my life like you did that poor kid?”

Johnny claimed that whatever went down “wasn’t my fault,” despite Blake thinking otherwise. Johnny later chalked up the fight to “dumb tennis s***,” but it seems there’s more to the story.

“There’s [a] video, you almost murdered him you psychopath,” Blake said at one point. Johnny replied, “Leave my f***ing family alone or I’ll almost murder you.”
